Did you ever Some sharp facts on shaving By FRED BAYLES Associated Press Writer BOSTON The next time you see a stubbly face in the morning, consider this: The average American male spends 3,350 hours more than four months of his life scraping his face with a piece of metal. The people at Gillette who keep track of such things, have put together a list of shaving statistics to give some wonder to what many men see as only a mundane ritual. For example: A single whisker grows an average of one. fifteenth of a thousandth of an inch every day. That works out to 5V4 inches a year and 27V4 feet during the 75-year lifetime of the average male, who begins shaving at 15, shaves an average of 5.5 times a week and devotes just less than 12 minutes to each shave.
The beard covers a third of a square foot and contains about 15,500 hairs. When dry, the hairs are about as strong as thin copper wire. Shaving removes 65 milligrams of hair each day. If you collected the clippings, you could have yourself a one-pound ball in 16 years. Ninety percent of U.S.
males 73.2 million of them shave regularly. More than 73 percent, or "53.7 million, are wet shavers, those who use blades and shaving cream; a little more than 26 (See Shaving on Page 5A.) Couples line up hoping to adopt a child program director. "This is still the American dream." The people camping out want babies younger than 3 years old, she said: "If they would take something else, there would not be a waiting-in-line process." Adoption has become increasingly difficult in the United States because of a declining birth rate, legal abortions and the growing inclination of some unwed mothers to keep their children. Adoption officials say waits can stretch to three years or more for a white (See Adopt on Page 5A.) DALLAS (AP) Pam and Jim Has-tings were first in line at 8 a.m. Friday.
Clifford and Barbara Bond, veterans of the wait for a child, brought a camper loaded with groceries and secured a place close behind. About 67 couples hoping for a rare opportunity to adopt a white child lined up during the weekend outside the Hope Cottage Children's Bureau as the private adoption agency prepared to take the names of would-be parents for the first time in two years. The line of applicants, their lawn fur niture and their sleeping bags snaked along outside the office building north of downtown Dallas. Waiting couples devised an informal agreement by which each new arrival took a number. "They're taking roll calls on and off to make sure the people signed up are here.
Either the couple or friends have to answer when our names are called," said accountant Bill Hines, who held the No. 10 spot. The agency, which places about 60 children a yearr planned to open its doors at 8 a.m. today and take applications on a first-come, first-served basis from 100 couples. Hope Cottage announced the opening of applications in a small notice in a local newspaper.
It was the third such announcement since 1978 and in May 1980, more than 100 couples showed up for a chance at adoption. Hope Cottage says it gets more than 2,000 inquiries a year. "The issue today is that all of these people want Anglo, healthy infants," said Sonja Romanowski, Hope Cottage.
